LGBTQ+ Family Attorney in Northern Texas
Passionately Serving Clients Throughout Northern Texas Counties
When Was Gay & Lesbian Marriage Legalized in Texas?
After the 2015 Supreme Court ruling of Obergefell & Hodges that legalized same-sex marriage on the grounds that the U.S. Constitution guaranteed the right to marry to all Americans, a number of significant legislative victories have been won in the name of LGBTQ+ rights. In the realm of family law, these include the right for gay and lesbian couples to adopt a child and for married same-sex couples to seek a divorce, or financial support and custody after that divorce.
Camille Borg Law PLLC handles family law matters for people from all walks of life, providing the same staunch advocacy and personalized advice to every client she takes on. She is dedicated to helping members of the LGBTQ+ community protect their rights and best interests and preserve the standard of living their children have become accustomed to.

LGBTQ+ Custody Cases in Texas
Custody cases are more complex for a same-sex couple then they are for legally married, opposite-sex couples in terms of seeking custody or support for children. Determining custody and the parentage of a married heterosexual couple is generally more cut and dry when each spouse is the biological parent.
For an LGBTQ+ couple, a Texas marriage license doesn’t mean that each spouse is the presumptive parent of a child born during the course of the marriage. Instead, the non-biological parent must legally adopt the child or children to be considered their parent in the eyes of the law. Adoption, therefore, is a necessary step that not only allows a parent to seek custody in the case of a divorce, but also benefits the child in that they will then be legally entitled to all the financial and social privileges that biological parents and children share.
Compassionate Legal Counsel for Same-Sex Couples
Ever since same-sex couples were granted all the legal benefits and rights that heterosexual couples enjoy when it comes to marriage, the laws have been evolving to address the issues that arise after an LGBTQ+ couple decides to end that marriage.
Our firm can help you navigate any of the following family law matters:
- Divorce or legal separation
- Child custody or support issues
- Property and debt division
- Spousal Maintenance
- Modifying or enforcing an order
- Parental defense in CPS cases
These cases are nuanced and not every lawyer is prepared to handle the unique issues that arise in an LGBTQ+ family law matter. While they are similar to cases involving straight couples, they should not be treated the same. In fact, no two legal matters are ever the same and our firm will always handle your matter with the personalized and compassionate assistance you deserve.
